Disruptive Potential

How generative AI is
redefining business models

From September to November 2024, F.A.Z. Business Media | research surveyed a total of 189 people with exposed decision-making positions in companies in Germany for the study ‘Disruptive potential: How generative AI is redefining business models’ by Sopra Steria and F.A.Z. Institut. Computer-assisted web interviews (CAWI) and telephone interviews (CATI) were conducted for this purpose. The survey analysed the extent to which companies use generative AI, how they view the technology and what effects they expect its use to have on their business model. Free text questions were also asked in this context. Some of the answers are distributed throughout this study report and labelled accordingly.

Definition of terms

The following explanations and the underlying survey address the topics of artificial intelligence (AI) and generative AI (GenAI). We understand these terms for this study as follows:

Artificial intelligence (AI)

Artificial intelligence describes machine systems that imitate human intelligence based on stored data using learned algorithms in order to fulfil tasks. These tasks can be simple, such as recognising images, or complex, such as writing new code based on instructions in natural language.

Generative AI (GenAI)

Generative AI refers to precisely these complex AI systems that not only sort and organise data, but can also generate new content such as text, images or designs based on the training data. It creates corresponding elements for complex instructions such as ‘Create a competitive analysis, an onboarding schedule or a social media campaign for me’. Well-known examples of this subtype of AI are ChatGPT, MidJourney and DALL-E.
